NATURE conservation officials are currently tracking a buffalo that was spotted in the Oshikunde Constituency of the Ohangwena Region on Saturday.
According to Okongo Constituency councillor Efraim Lebeus Shipindo, the buffalo was first spotted in Omutwewomunhu village on Saturday and has since moved through neighbouring villages such as Omakangha and Okahameyona, where it was seen this morning.
A helicopter is expected to join the tracking team today, Shipindo said.
He said the wild animal appeared “from nowhere” and that, although dangerous when provoked, it has so far not caused any damage or harmed anyone.
This is the fifth buffalo reported in the Ohangwena Region in seven years.
Shipindo also reported the presence of a herd of 21 elephants in Angolan villages directly north of Okongo, which is located less than 20 kilometres from the border.
He urged residents to remain calm and not to be unnecessarily alarmed by the presence of wild herbivores. “Simply report their presence to the authorities, while avoiding any provocative behaviour towards such wild animals,” he said.
