THE Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) marked International Girls in ICT Day 2026 with a call for greater female participation in the technology sector, urging young women to embrace opportunities in artificial intelligence and other digital fields while reinforcing its commitment to digital inclusion through support for school ICT development.
The event, held on 23 April 2026 at A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek, brought together learners, educators and stakeholders under the theme “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future”, highlighting the growing role of technology in education, healthcare and economic development.
CRAN Chief Executive Officer Emilia Nghikembua encouraged girls to actively pursue careers in information and communication technology, noting that diversity is essential for innovation and that inclusive participation helps ensure technology reflects the needs of society as a whole.
“Technology is transforming our societies, and AI is at the forefront of this change,” Nghikembua said, adding that young women should consider careers as developers, data scientists, cybersecurity experts and entrepreneurs.
She further stressed the importance of responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as digital systems become increasingly integrated into everyday life.
As part of its commitment to strengthening digital learning, CRAN announced a donation of N$53,000 to A. Shipena Secondary School’s ICT laboratory to enhance teaching and learning facilities and support the school’s academic performance.
“Do not be afraid of technology. Be curious, explore, question, and imagine how you can use ICT to improve the world,” Nghikembua urged learners.
The commemoration forms part of CRAN’s broader efforts to promote an inclusive and innovative digital environment and to encourage the participation of young women in Namibia’s growing digital economy.
