The Kunene River’s flow rate has continued to intensify, beginning the week at 785.90 cubic metres per second (m³/s) on Monday, 13 April 2026, and increasing to 1,442.6 m³/s this morning, 16 April 2026.
This was revealed by the Hydrological Services of Namibia, which has urged the public—especially communities living downstream of the river—to remain cautious and to refrain from moving through flooded areas.

“This rising trend indicates sustained upstream inflows and elevated river levels. Residents and communities along the Kunene River, particularly downstream of Ruacana, are advised to remain on high alert, avoid crossing flooded areas, and take necessary precautions, as further increases in river levels may lead to localised flooding,” the Hydrological Services of Namibia warned.
The strong river flow has been documented in various photos and videos, including images of the Kunene River mouth in remote areas rarely seen by most people. The recent rapid rise in water levels has made these areas even more striking.
