TRAGEDY struck on Easter Friday after popular SWAPO Member of the National Assembly and member of key standing committees, James Uerikua, who also served as a Geingob-appointed Otjozondjupa governor, died in a road accident at the notorious Osire bend following an alleged tyre burst. He was 43. His wife and 14-year-old son were rushed to hospital; sadly, his son passed away.
According to the Namibian Police, the crash occurred on the road between Otjiwarongo and Okakarara, where Uerikua was travelling with five other occupants. It is suspected that a tyre burst caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
National Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo confirmed Uerikua’s identity, while Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander Philip Nhuleipo Hidengwa confirmed that he died at the scene.
Two other occupants sustained minor injuries. His other children were among those who survived the crash.
