HEAVY rains experienced in 2025 are said to have caused damage estimated at about N$353 million to the capital’s roads.
In addition to this, a total of N$384 million is needed for yearly maintenance of roads, which is said to have not been maintained in 10 years.
This was revealed at a media briefing held by the City of Windhoek, which said that the lack of repairs to roads in the last 10 years has been exacerbated by the wear and tear caused by thunderstorms experienced in 2025, driving the funding budget up.
This was revealed by Rowan Adams, Acting Strategic Executive of Infrastructure, Water and Technical Services at the City of Windhoek. Adams stated that, as it currently stands, half of the capital’s road network needs maintenance, and that 16% of roads have poor surfaces, whilst 18% are poor in structure.
He, however, added that progress is being made, and that a total of 67,344 potholes had already been repaired by mid-March 2026, with a total of N$64.4 million spent on this.
He added that, whilst the City of Windhoek indicated it would require about N$737 million for the 2025/26 financial year for routine and scheduled maintenance, only about N$46 million was allocated by the Road Fund Authority.
