AROUND 75% of the land in Kabbe North Constituency and 65% in Kabbe South Constituency is submerged as flooding in the Zambezi Region continues, with the Zambezi River just 7 centimetres shy of reaching the 7-metre mark.
The extent of the flooding was confirmed by Beavan Walubita, the Director of Planning and Rural Development at the Zambezi Regional Council, during a briefing with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in Katima Mulilo on Wednesday. The briefing aimed to provide the president with an update on the flooding’s impact on communities and infrastructure and to coordinate government response efforts to assist affected populations.
According to Namibia’s Hydrological Services, the Zambezi River reached a water level of 6.93 metres on Wednesday morning. Walubita confirmed that the flooding has severely impacted the region, isolating critical infrastructure, including schools, clinics, and police stations.
“The situation has significantly affected service delivery in the region, particularly in the education and health sectors,” he said.
Walubita confirmed that relocation and rescue efforts are ongoing within the region. He revealed that a relocation centre has been established in the Sibbinda constituency, where several households affected by flash floods have been accommodated.
However, these efforts are not without challenges. According to Walubita, some of the region’s affected residents are reluctant to move to safer areas. Furthermore, Walubita revealed that there is a need for more tents, blankets, food supplies, and fuel to support ongoing rescue and relief operations.
