OVER the past decade, Namibia has pursued an integrated, digital approach to civil registration and identity management, said the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration and Safety and Security, Lucia Iipumbu, in Windhoek this morning as she welcomed delegates from the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention who are in Namibia on a learning visit.
The visitors — including representatives from Botswana, Ethiopia and Senegal — and their Namibian counterparts will discuss e-Notification and Integrated Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems.
“From the establishment of our National Population Registration System to the strategic milestones that followed, we have worked deliberately to build a robust CRVS ecosystem,” said Iipumbu.
She highlighted Namibia’s progress in implementing the CRVS system, including the e-Birth and e-Death notification systems introduced in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
She said that the e-Notification System connects 153 facilities, enabling real-time electronic notifications for civil registration. “Namibia is eager to share its experiences and learn from other countries,” she said.
The visit aims to strengthen CRVS systems, support good governance, and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal of “legal identity for all by 2030”.
“We view this not merely as a visit,” said Iipumbu, “but as a platform for mutual learning, peer-to-peer collaboration, and the advancement of innovative, interoperable CRVS solutions tailored to African realities.”
