MOTORISTS are being warned of higher-than-normal traffic volumes on all major routes today. Authorities advise drivers to exercise caution and follow essential road safety guidelines.
The West Coast Safety Initiative of Namibia has highlighted the importance of ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy, headlights and lights are properly adjusted, windscreens are clean, and tyres are regularly inspected, especially before extended journeys. Drivers are urged to be well-rested, take regular breaks every 200 km or every two hours, and avoid driving while fatigued, under the influence of alcohol, or when taking medication that may cause drowsiness.
All occupants are required to wear seatbelts, and drivers should maintain safe following distances, keep both hands on the steering wheel, observe mirrors regularly, and adhere to speed limits. Overtaking should only be done when safe, never on solid lines, blind crests, or when visibility is limited.
Motorists are also reminded to avoid distractions such as cellphone use, plan journeys to include sufficient rest stops, drive with headlights on, and exercise patience, courtesy, and awareness at all times. Night travel is discouraged due to increased animal movement. In the event of oncoming glare, drivers should reduce speed and keep to the left as safely as possible.
