THE Bank of Namibia has warned the public about a fraudulent investment scheme circulating online, as authorities highlight a growing trend of cyber-enabled scams and impersonation tactics targeting unsuspecting individuals in the country.

In a statement, the central bank cautioned against a fake website impersonating a legitimate media outlet and unlawfully using the likeness of Deputy Governor Leonie Dunn to falsely claim endorsement of an investment scheme. The Bank stressed that neither the Deputy Governor nor the institution endorses or solicits investments of any kind, urging the public not to click suspicious links, share personal information, or transfer money.

The warning comes amid increasing concerns over cybercrime in Namibia, with recent reports pointing to a rise in phishing scams, fraudulent websites, and other forms of cyber-enabled fraud. Cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting public trust by mimicking credible institutions and public figures to lure victims into illegitimate schemes.

The Namibia Cyber Security Incident Response Team (NAM-CSIRT), in its latest quarterly report, said that while overall cyber vulnerabilities and events showed a decline towards the end of 2025, incidents involving phishing and fraud remain a significant concern. These scams often rely on deception and social engineering to manipulate victims into disclosing sensitive information or making financial transactions.

Authorities have emphasised the importance of vigilance, advising the public to verify information through official platforms before engaging with any investment opportunity. The Bank of Namibia has encouraged individuals to report suspected fraudulent schemes via email at illegalschemes@bon.com.na or by calling +264 61 283 5111, and to rely only on verified communication channels for financial information.

Protecting personal information and remaining cautious online are critical in preventing financial losses, as cybercriminals continue to refine their methods and expand their reach across digital platforms.
