Alleged abusive employer appears in court and is remanded in custody

Staff Reporter

SELMA Daniel, 62, appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of trafficking in persons, child exploitation, neglect, and child abandonment.

Daniel, a resident of Oshiyagaya village in the Oshikoto Region, was arrested for allegedly abusing and exploiting her 16-year-old Angolan employee, Fernanda.

State Prosecutor Wisdom Ndakondja opposed bail, and Magistrate Lydia Kambonde remanded Daniel in custody, postponing the case to 19 August 2026. Daniel will apply for legal aid and submit a formal bail application.

Fernanda, originally from Cuvelai, Angola, was employed last year as a domestic worker for N$500 per month but was allegedly never paid. She was allegedly forced to work in the mahangu field, starved and beaten, and slept in a shack with no bed or mattress.

She was rescued by the police and the Ministry of Gender and is receiving medical care and psychosocial support at Onandjokwe District Hospital.

THE ACCUSED: Selma Daniel.
