THE Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has issued an urgent directive to private schools in Namibia offering the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curriculum, requiring Grade 12 learners to be registered with recognised and accredited examining bodies.
The Ministry Executive Director, Mbumba Erastus Haitengela, said that the IEB International Secondary Certificate (IEB-ISC) is not recognised by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) or accredited under the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) framework. As a result, learners completing the IEB-ISC may be denied admission to Namibian and international universities, putting their tertiary education, employment, and professional development at risk.
In accordance with the Basic Education Act, 2020 (Act No. 3 of 2020) and the Basic Education Regulations, 2023, Regulation 62(1)(c), all private schools must urgently register their final-year learners with the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment (DNEA) or another recognised examining body to ensure their qualifications are legally recognised.
The Ministry emphasised that failure to comply could have long-term negative consequences for learners and urged schools to take immediate action. Schools are required to confirm compliance in writing as soon as possible. The ministry stresses the importance of safeguarding the educational and professional futures of students.
