Two men busted for attempted bank robbery

Staff Reporter

TWO men, aged 39 and 40 respectively, were arrested after a failed attempt to break into Standard Bank’s main branch in Swakopmund.

According to Senior Inspector Judith Shomongula, the incident of trespassing happened on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, at about 21:30 at the Standard Bank main branch, on the corner of Tobias Hainyeko and Dr Sam Nujoma Avenue, Swakopmund.

“It is alleged that a security officer of G-Bullet Security Company was posted at a Standard Bank ATM and reported on duty at about 17:50. It is alleged that he observed a suspicious grey/silver seven-seater vehicle with registration number N15159S driving up and down in Tobias Hainyeko Street,” Shomongula said.

She stated that it is further alleged that, a moment later, one of the seven-seater occupants, a dark-complexioned male, jumped out of the vehicle and came to the ATM.

“It is alleged that he requested the security officer’s assistance to withdraw an alleged blue wallet voucher, and it was during that moment of distraction that two male persons passed behind the security officer and entered the backyard of the Standard Bank building. The car guard who was on duty spotted them and immediately alerted the ATM security officer, who called for backup from his security company as well as the police,” Shomongula said.

Police and security officers responded promptly and caught two male persons who were found running on the roof of the bank building with backpacks containing different housebreaking implements such as knives, a wheel spanner, two grinders and grinder blades, among others.
