THE Directorate of National Heritage and Culture, under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport and Culture, commemorated International Mother Language Day at Tsintsabis Combined School in the Guinas Constituency, Oshikoto Region.

The commemoration took place ahead of International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated annually on 21 February. This year, the day is observed under the theme “Youth Voices on Multilingual Education”.

“The day was first observed globally in February 2000, established to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism, recognising that language is not merely a tool of communication but a vessel of identity, tradition, and collective memory,” the ministry explained.

In Namibia, the event is being observed over two days. The first day focused on learners from the Oshikoto Region, bringing together students and members of the San community, including the !Khûn, Hai//om and Ju’hoansi, among others. The second day will extend the festivities to include broader community participation.
