Health Ministry launches investigation into death of Areseb

Staff Reporter

THE Ministry of Health and Social Services has said that it has launched an investigation into the death of a 21-year-old man identified as Elijah Laurenzo Areseb, who is alleged to have died from medical negligence at the Otjiwarongo District Hospital.

Areseb died on 5 February 2026, after experiencing difficulties with breathing and failing to receive urgent medical assistance.

Penda Ithindi, the executive director within the health ministry, said that the ministry has taken note of a demonstration held by the community of Otjiwarongo regarding the tragic passing of Areseb.

“The Ministry has also received inquiries from various media houses concerning allegations of medical negligence surrounding this case. The Ministry wishes to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire Otjiwarongo community during this difficult time. The loss of a young life is a tragedy that affects us all, and we share in the sorrow of the family. We acknowledge the pain and frustration expressed by the bereaved family and the community members,” Ithindi said.

He added that the Ministry takes allegations of medical negligence and procedural failure very seriously.

“In response to the concerns raised by the family and the community, the Ministry has immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the clinical management and circumstances surrounding Mr. Areseb’s care. While we understand the community’s desire for immediate answers, we must ensure that due process is followed to arrive at a fair and accurate conclusion,” Ithindi said.

He further assured the public that should the investigation find any evidence of negligence, deviation from clinical protocols, or administrative failure, appropriate remedial and disciplinary actions will be taken to ensure accountability.

“We are committed to transparency and will communicate the findings and the way forward once the process is concluded. The Ministry remains dedicated to its mandate of providing accessible, affordable, and quality health care to all Namibian people and will continue working to address the challenges facing our health facilities,” Ithindi said.
