PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Erkki Nghimtina, a veteran of Namibia’s liberation struggle and former Cabinet and Parliament member, who passed away on Sunday, 8 February 2026, at the age of 78.
In her message of condolences, President Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted Nghimtina’s lifelong dedication to Namibia’s independence and nation-building. “He devoted his entire life to the liberation of his motherland and served as a Member of Parliament from 1995 to 2020,” she said.
Nghimtina held several key government portfolios after independence, including Works and Transport, Mines and Energy, Labour and Industrial Relations, and Defence. He joined the ranks of PLAN combatants in Angola during the liberation struggle and remained committed to the development of Namibia throughout his life.
“His passing robs the nation of a committed freedom fighter and dedicated national leader. During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said. She extended her heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people and Government of Namibia, adding, “May Comrade Nghimtina’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
