Two more police officers suspected of drug trafficking

Staff Reporter

SCARCELY four days after a member of the Namibian Police managed to flee when caught red-handed selling drugs to a trial-awaiting inmate in Walvis Bay, two more law enforcement officers were apprehended in Rundu in the Kavango East Region, suspected of drug trafficking.

A police officer was arrested in Rundu on Tuesday after he allegedly collected parcels from someone at the Rundu District Hospital and then attempted to smuggle them into the police holding cells, but was intercepted by colleagues and body-searched.

The search yielded N$280 cash, eleven bankies of cannabis, four cellphone batteries, three cellphones, two packets of “Yes” cigarettes as well as several loose cigarettes, an ATM card and six SIM cards, among others.

Another cop was apprehended yesterday (Wednesday) after he allegedly received contraband from a member of the public at the Rundu Magistrate’s Court.

He was body-searched on the spot and 19 bankies of cannabis and N$100 cash were found.

The Rundu suspects are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the search for the 35-year-old male police constable who managed to run away in Walvis Bay continues.

The incident happened at Tutaleni Police Station on Saturday when the suspect allegedly took cannabis to the holding cells and handed it over to a trial-awaiting inmate, who hid the contraband on his body.

A fellow cop detected the suspicious movements and decided to approach the inmate, who was found in possession of 20 small bags and two big plastic bags of cannabis.
