THE Presidency has reiterated its steadfast commitment to media freedom and the professional role of journalists in promoting transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse in Namibia. In a statement, the Office of the President highlighted the importance of journalists as vital actors in strengthening democracy and fostering open dialogue across society.
The Presidency said that while occasional misunderstandings may occur in interactions between public institutions and the media, it remains dedicated to upholding press freedom, access to information, and structured communication as enshrined in Article 21 of the Namibian Constitution.
The statement emphasised that formal engagement with the President and State House is guided by designated platforms and protocols, and that respect for these processes is necessary to ensure orderly operations and the safety of the Head of State. The Presidency also stressed that professionalism, respect for institutional rules, and adherence to security procedures are essential when journalists operate within State House or other sensitive environments.
“Press freedom, like all democratic rights, comes with responsibilities,” the statement said, adding that any conduct deemed potentially disruptive or unsafe will be addressed according to established security protocols.
The Office of the President concluded by reaffirming its dedication to maintaining a professional, respectful, and collaborative relationship with the media, in the shared interest of transparency, accountability, and the public’s right to information.
