THE hectic days of parents and guardians walking up and down procuring books, school wear, and other necessities for their children have reached their climax today, with thousands of children flocking to their respective schools for the commencement of the 2026 academic year.

Large crowds were observed at several schools this morning as parents accompanied their children — mostly pre- and first-graders — on their first day of schooling.

The Deputy Mayor of Ondangwa Town, Nikodemus Amadhila, addressed a message to learners as they kicked off the school year, saying that education is the strongest foundation for personal success and national development.

He urged learners to respect their teachers, support one another, and uphold values of honesty, hard work, and respect.

He also encouraged learners to approach their studies with discipline, determination, and courage.

“Believe in your abilities,” he said, “stay focused on your goals, and never allow challenges to discourage you. Every effort you make today is an investment in the leader, professional, and responsible citizen you are becoming.”

Amadhila said that this new year brings fresh opportunities to grow, to learn, and to shape a brighter future not only for the learners themselves but also for their families and the “beloved Ondangwa Town.”

The Deputy Mayor appealed to the teachings of Christianity, which is the dominant religion in Namibia, urging learners to be guided by the Word of God and citing Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
