THE Office of the Judiciary has condemned any actions, whether deliberate or negligent, that led to a fire outbreak at the Rundu Magistrate’s Court building in the early hours of 27 November 2025.
This comes after police in the Kavango East Region said that the fire may have been intentionally set, with an arson case opened, and forensic experts from Windhoek dispatched to the scene.
Victoria Hango, Public Relations Officer within the Judiciary, said that the incident resulted in substantial damage to the structure, notably affecting the administration block and the criminal section, where daily charge sheets are maintained.
“At this stage, the cause of the fire has not been determined, and preliminary reports from the relevant authorities are awaited. Measures are being put in place to secure court records and files, and the review of backup systems and digital archives is underway to mitigate any potential data loss,” Hango said.
She concluded that the Judiciary strongly condemns any actions—whether deliberate or negligent—that endanger the safety and integrity of the justice system.
“We remain committed to preserving access to justice, upholding the rule of law, and minimising disruption to court operations. Further updates will be issued as the investigation yields additional verified information. The public is encouraged to refrain from speculation while investigations are ongoing,” Hango concluded.
