Concerns over Tsumeb evictees are being addressed — Ndjendjela

THE concerns of Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa about Tsumeb residents who were evicted from Endombo in Kuvukiland last year are being addressed on an urgent basis, said Tsumeb Constituency Councillor Gotty Ndjendjela.

When he visited the town recently, Sankwasa ordered the Tsumeb local authority to allocate plots to those evicted from Endombo.

“They are being given plots in the town’s Extension 9, exactly as suggested by the minister,” said Ndjendjela.

The minister was unhappy with the extremely small plots allocated to the Endombo evictees, who number around 3,000.

Ndjendjela said that the challenge of urban residential land is exacerbated by “greedy people.”

According to him, there are people who erect shacks in informal settlements in multiple towns, anticipating that the squatters will eventually be removed and allocated plots elsewhere. “That way, those greedy people now own plots in several towns. To address this anomaly, we need to have a nationwide plots database,” he said.
