LEONARD Shikulo, the Okahao Constituency councillor who is currently serving his second five-year term in office and is seeking re-election as the SWAPO Party candidate, said that he will continue to work hard to make sure that no resident is left behind.
Addressing the issue of access to water in his constituency, Shikulo said that he was not entirely happy with the inconsistent way water from a local dam — Oshukwa Dam — is being distributed, reaching the farthest villages while those villagers closest to the water source receive very little water.
Shikulo, who spoke recently at a community engagement meeting in his capacity as constituency councillor, added that the seven-year-old Oshukwa Dam was built with the express purpose of improving water supply to the remote villages such as Iitapa, Okeeholongo and Onakatili.
However, he said, the distribution system is proving inefficient.
He cited the example of villages located as far as 70 kilometres from the dam where water supply is perfect, while villages located less than ten kilometres from the dam struggle with water supply, mostly during spring.
Shikulo said that access to clean water is a basic right and urged the Department of Rural Water Supply to intervene.
He promised that, as councillor, he will continue to work hard to make sure that no resident is left behind.
Shikulo was SWAPO’s Okahao district coordinator before he became constituency councillor after winning uncontested during the 2015 regional council elections.
He was re-elected in 2020 when he obtained 4,694 votes, defeating his sole opponent, Erastus Shipopyeni of the IPC, who garnered 396 votes.
