Namibia’s retail scene has experienced a significant change recently, as the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group officially reintroduced Model, a proudly Namibian brand, to the Namibian market on the 1st of July 2025.
The new look also brings with it new shopping experiences with the latest innovations in technology. The Auas valley store boast with the first self-check-out stations in Namibia, as well as an electronic personal shopping assistant.
Self-checkout is nothing new on a global scale, but it took the likes of Model to introduce it to Namibian shores. The existing four (4) stations cut checkout time considerably for people with limited amounts of goods not prepared to que especially during peak times. Although some shoppers are still a bit skeptical about the intrusion, most shoppers took to it like a duck to water.
But, Model did not stop there! The group also introduced a personal shopping assistant is the form of a robot, directly out of the pages of Star Wars. The little electronic assistant will guide you to any part of the shop with a simple prompt from the shopper. Simply select your product on the touch-screen, and experience the 21st century for yourself.
Although this technology is still on a trial bases, Model plans to roll out the self-check-out stations to other shops in Namibia in the near future. Model is about serving Namibians better with the latest innovations, supporting local suppliers, and to be proudly Namibian. Model is back, better, stronger and moving into the future.
The Auas Valley branch in Windhoek lead the transformation, undergoing a complete revamp that finished in September. The move marks the end of a 27-year partnership with Pick n Pay South Africa, with full local control over operations, technology, and supplier relationships.
