A GROUP of Fixed-Term Contract Employees in the City of Windhoek’s Solid Waste Management Division will embark on a protected strike starting tomorrow. The strike follows unresolved disputes over salaries and benefits.
The employees, responsible for litter picking, street sweeping, and general cleaning in residential and business areas, have agreed with the City on rules to ensure the strike remains lawful and peaceful. Strikers will gather at the designated assembly point between Dortmund Street and New Castle Street (China Town).
The City confirmed that the “No Work, No Pay” principle will apply and will not hire replacement workers except where workers are required to prevent danger to life or property. The Namibian Police Force and security personnel will monitor the strike to ensure public safety.
Residents are urged to cooperate by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding illegal dumping. The City has also put contingency measures in place to maintain essential services.
City officials continue to engage employees and labour representatives in discussions to reach a fair resolution and will provide regular updates as the situation develops.
