The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) launched the 2025 World Space Week Namibia this week.

The event is being celebrated from 4 to 10 October under the theme “Living in Space”.

“This annual event, aims to raise public awareness about space science and technology, inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts, and showcase Namibia’s potential in space research,” the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture said.

The Ministry described the initiative as a reflection of its continued commitment to advancing space science and technology in the country. The ministry added that other similar efforts include a Cabinet decision passed in July 2025 to develop the Space Science and Technology Bill, which will regulate the sector.

“Additionally, the Ministry has funded the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) space degree programs, including a NanoSat Ground Data Receiving Station and laboratory equipment, which is nearing completion. Furthermore, the Ministry will soon co-fund the development of a CubeSat for earth observation, marking a significant step into upstream space science and technology,” the ministry explained.

Dr. Lisho Mundia, Deputy Executive Director in the Ministry, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to these goals during the launch event. With these initiatives, Namibia is taking significant steps in space research and development.
