Ohangwena Governor highlights importance of sports for youth

THE head of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, paid a courtesy call on the Ohangwena Regional Governor, Kadiva Hamutumwa, at Eenhana on Wednesday.

Mwiya briefed the governor about sports in general and zoomed in on sports for people living with disabilities, urging parents of children with physical challenges to embrace and involve them in sports rather than keeping them hidden away. “Let’s use sports to bring out these children. They are our children, and we love them. Through sports, they can achieve great things,” he said.

Mwiya also used the opportunity to reveal that the 2025 Annual Namibia Sports Awards will take place in the town of Ongwediva, Oshana Region, on 22 November.

The governor pointed out that the Namibian government has identified sports as a priority sector, ranking it number two in the SWAPO Party manifesto and the NDP6 priorities.

Hamutumwa underscored the importance of prioritising sports in the region, highlighting its direct connection to the youth, who make up the majority of the population in the region and in the country.

“Therefore,” she said, “we must all recognise sports as a crucial area.”
