Thousands of San community members issued with national documents

THE Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS) has announced the successful completion of the nationwide San Community Outreach Programme, which focused on the issuance of national documents to members of the previously marginalised community.

According to the MHAISS, 22,401 people were successfully served, 6,000 more than the projected target of about 16,000.

The outreach initiative was developed to ensure that members of one of the indigenous minority groups in the country acquire national documents that will enable them to have fair and equitable access to essential public services such as healthcare, education, social benefits, and opportunities for economic participation.

The outreach programme lasted from June to August, during which time dedicated ministry staff travelled across eleven regions of the country, taking these vital services to the San community.

“This initiative underscores the government’s commitment towards ensuring that all Namibians, regardless of location, have the required national documents and equal access to services,” said the MHAISS in a statement.
