CABINET has issued several directives aimed at accelerating digital transformation to enhance Namibia’s ICT infrastructure and capabilities, thereby driving economic growth, innovation, and inclusive development.
These directives include instructing the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to engage Yango’s USD 20 million venture capital fund to secure financing for Namibian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the technology sector.
This was announced by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, during a recent Cabinet briefing, where she outlined several key initiatives supporting Namibia’s digital development agenda.
In addition to the engagement with Yango, Theofelus revealed that Cabinet also directed the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister, to finalise the Concept Note and Project Proposal for the establishment of a National Data Centre.
She further announced that Cabinet instructed the Ministries of Information and Communication Technology and Urban and Rural Development to develop a legal framework for smart city development, beginning with the City of Windhoek.
Furthermore, Theofelus shared that Cabinet directed the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to submit a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of ICT between the Governments of Namibia and Angola.
She added that Cabinet also acknowledged the recent launch of 5G technology by Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), and recognised the participation of five Namibian tertiary students in the Huawei Seeds for the Future Programme. This initiative is designed to equip young people with the skills and mindset necessary to succeed in an increasingly digital and fast-changing global environment.
