THE Minister of Environment and Tourism, Indileni Daniel, recently inaugurated the Mutjimagumwe Community Woodwork Cooperative Project in Mpungu, Mpungu Constituency, Kavango West.
The ministry explained that the Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative Project is a N$6 million initiative aimed at producing high-quality furniture and wood products, crafted with skill, pride, and purpose. According to the ministry, the project currently employs 18 artisans.

“This is a demonstration of our national priorities, as outlined in the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), the SWAPO Party Manifesto, and The Ministry of Environment Forestry and Tourism Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2030. The project is also complementing government program through Education Ministry by repairing broken chairs and tables for reuse by schools in Kavango West Region and beyond,” the ministry said.
The cooperative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It forms part of the Namibia Integrated Landscape Approach for Enhancing Livelihoods and Environmental Governance (NILALEG) project, which contributes to the government’s broader poverty eradication agenda. Funding for the project has been provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
“NILALEG’s projects aim to promote an integrated landscape management approach in key agricultural and forest landscapes, sustainable nature-based livelihoods, protecting and restoring forests as carbon-sinks land degradation neutrality,” the ministry added.
