A TOTAL of 27 suspects were arrested in poaching-related cases through the Anti-Poaching Operation Phase 29, ‘Yesa Ongava’, and other crime prevention operations in the region.
This was revealed by Major General Elias Mutota during the launch of ‘Operation Lucia’.
According to Mutota, a total of 12 vehicles were impounded, including two trucks, and N$20,000 was frozen in a bank account.
“The police have also recorded the recovery of two rhino horns and a pangolin skin,” he said.
He added that five hunting rifles with three silencers and binoculars, three shotguns, one air gun, two pistols, and 75 live rounds of ammunition of different calibres were seized.
He indicated that these achievements reflect the members’ dedication, professionalism, and the growing support received from communities and various stakeholders.
Furthermore, Mutota highlighted another serious concern: the continuously alarming increase in the smuggling of illegal fuel from Angola, commonly known as “Ngungula”, particularly in the northern regions bordering Angola.
“This illicit trade not only undermines our national economy, but also poses significant safety and environmental risks,” he added.
To date, the Oshana Region has confiscated a total of 67,701 litres of illegal fuel, with an estimated value of N$17,000,000.
He said that the confiscated fuel is currently being stored at various police stations, creating a serious hazard to the safety of officers, the public, and surrounding infrastructure.
