THE Oshana Region on Friday gathered for a heartfelt send-off, complete with a light meal and music, to bid farewell to Elia Irimari, who served two terms as the region’s governor.

Irimari’s departure marks the end of a six-year tenure during which he became known for his approachable leadership style and dedication to regional development.

Andreas Uutoni, chairperson of the Oshana Regional Council, lauded Irimari not only for his policies and projects but also for his remarkable humour, humility, and humanity.

Uutoni highlighted Irimari’s ability to balance the weight of leadership with the warmth of genuine connection, emphasising that he showed them leadership is not just about decisions, but about people.

He expressed gratitude for Irimari’s dedicated service, wishing him well in his next chapter and hoping his legacy will continue to inspire the region and serve as a source of insight.

Andreas Amundjindi, councillor of Uukwiyuushona Constituency, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Irimari’s tenure as one marked by vision, hard work, and a commitment to uplifting Oshana.

Amundjindi said the widespread acknowledgement from colleagues, traditional leaders, and stakeholders regarding the significant impact of Irimari’s leadership.

“As you transition to new endeavours, know that your legacy remains embedded in the progress of this region,” he said.

He then thanked Irimari for guiding the region to its current state of opportunities and progress.

During his time as governor, Irimari prioritised key areas of development.

He emphasised significant progress in water infrastructure, road networks, and educational investments.

He also focused on community well-being, urging leaders to combat inequality and ensure that no one is left behind.

Irimari was known for his advocacy for youth empowerment, initiating programs like training to help young people start small backyard gardens to contribute to food security and earn an income.

He also championed efforts for communities to harvest water for use during dry spells.

His administration worked to address challenges such as illegal land occupation and fencing in grazing areas.

He also consistently urged regional leadership to work together to improve socio-economic conditions and ensure proper consultation, coordination, and cooperation for development.

Prior to his appointment as governor in March 2019 by the late president Hage Geingob, Irimari served as the councillor for Ondangwa Urban Constituency starting in 2015, and also on the management committee of the Oshana Regional Council.

Before entering political office, he was a schoolteacher and was actively involved in the Namibia National Student Organisation (NANSO).

In his address at the farewell, Irimari extended his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the smooth execution of his duties during his time as governor, including traditional authorities, the business sector, the security cluster, the media, and community members.

He assured attendees that he would remain available to offer assistance and advice if called upon.

Looking ahead, Irimari revealed his plans to embrace a quieter life, focusing on farming at his farm.

He leaves the office expressing deep satisfaction with his tenure, stating he has no regrets and successfully completed all assigned tasks.
