New cholera case confirmed

Staff Reporter

THE Ministry of Health has reported that a new cholera case has been confirmed in Opuwo, Kunene Region.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Walter Kamaya, the latest case involves a 13-year-old boy who had no known contact with previously confirmed cases. The boy was admitted to hospital on Friday, 20 June 2025, and discharged on Sunday, 22 June 2025. He is currently in good condition. This brings the total number of confirmed cholera cases to six – all within the Opuwo District – excluding the four-year-old who died of cholera two weeks ago.

“With financial support from the WHO, we deployed a team of three SURGE staff yesterday to support the outbreak response activities. Two staff members are responsible for Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), and one is responsible for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). They were joined by an epidemiologist and a Senior Advisor for Public Health Systems and Security from the US CDC Country Office, who will primarily support, but not be limited to, surveillance and the enhancement of laboratory activities,” Kamaya said.
