Staff Reporter

CLOSE to 30 people have been left destitute in Walvis Bay after 12 shacks burned down in the town’s Tutaleni informal settlement.

According to Senior Inspector Judith Shomongula, the incident happened on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, at about 22:00 at house no. 4886, Penguin Street, Tutaleni.

“It is alleged that a neighbour saw smoke coming from one shack.
It is further alleged that 12 shacks from three different houses caught fire, and no fatalities were reported. Fire brigades and members of the Namibian Police Force responded to the incident, and the cause of the fire is not yet known,” Shomongula said.
