President Nandi-Ndaitwah inaugurates HyIron Oshivela Green Hydrogen plant

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has officially inaugurated the HyIron Oshivela Green Hydrogen Plant near Arandis in the Erongo Region – the first facility in Southern Africa to use green hydrogen in processing iron ore into direct reduced iron (DRI).

This marks President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first official inauguration since assuming office as Namibia’s fifth president. She highlighted the project’s importance not only as a pioneering initiative in green hydrogen technology but also for its ambition to achieve zero-emission iron production. This, she emphasised, is closely aligned with Namibia’s development priorities, particularly in value addition, natural resource beneficiation, and industrialisation.

“Today I stand before you with excitement to inaugurate this groundbreaking facility, which is a testament to the unwavering commitment and shared vision behind the HyIron project. This initiative will go a long way in helping us realise many of our development goals,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

The HyIron Oshivela Plant has received funding from various sources, including grants from the German government. It was named Project of the Year in 2024 and has secured a commercial off-take agreement with Benteler, a leading German automotive parts manufacturer, to supply DRI.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah called on investors to follow the example of this project, emphasising that Namibia’s competitive advantage as an investment destination lies in its continued commitment to peace, political stability, and the rule of law – all prerequisites for sustainable development and sound investments.

“To potential investors, I want to assure you that Namibia is open for business – serious business that will benefit both investors and the people of Namibia. As a government, we are ready and committed to creating a conducive environment for both local and foreign investors,” the President added.
