IN response to the severe road damage caused by recent flooding, the Roads Authority (RA) has announced the immediate appointment of Kambwa Construction, led by David Sheehama David, to urgently repair and restore the Onamutuku-Onkani road (DR3643), which is currently submerged.
RA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Conrad Lutombi, stressed the authority’s focus on solutions, acknowledging that many of their roads have been either damaged or washed away by water.
Hence, he said, their primary objective was to address the critical road infrastructure issues.
He affirmed the RA’s commitment to swift action by appointing contractors to restore and upgrade affected roads.
“The RA has engaged contractors who are already stationed in the regions, working on other ongoing construction projects, to take on the emergency repairs,” he said.
He stressed that this approach will allow for faster mobilization of resources and the quick restoration of safe road access.
David Sheehama David of Kambwa Construction indicated that his company is expected to employ about 25 locals for the repair project.
He added that he is committed to completing the work within a four-week timeframe.
Meanwhile, the broader impact of the flooding continues to be felt across the regions.
Elim Councillor Gerhard Shiimi acknowledged the dual nature of water, bringing both blessings and challenges, and urged residents to exercise extreme caution when navigating flooded areas.
Councillor Shiimi highlighted the critical situation of the Shoni-Onaanda-Omapopo road (DR3619), which has been inundated by an overflowing water pan, effectively cutting off access to essential services for residents.
He further revealed the recovery of around 15 vehicle number plates lost by individuals attempting to cross the floodwaters, with many vehicles sustaining damage in the process.
The severe flooding has also led to the closure of two schools in the area.
Furthermore, residents of the completely isolated Etope village are set to receive much-needed assistance, with medicine and food parcels to be airlifted into the area via helicopter.
