The Oshana Regional Council has mounted an “air bridge” of helicopter shipments to take food to herders at cattle posts located in the region’s southern grazing areas that are currently cut off by rainwater and flooding.
Cattle posts in the Okatjali Constituency will be supplied today.
The inaccessible herders at cattle posts in the Uuvudhiya and Ompundja constituencies will be supplied next.
However, regional council officials are accusing cattle post owners of being too slow in assembling the necessary food rations at the agreed-upon sites.
Besides the now inaccessible cattle posts in the region’s southern grazing areas, several rural communities in the region are equally cut off from essential services following the good rainfall in the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin and the massive waves of water from the southern Cunene Province of Angola, which washed away a number of roads, transformed the floodplains into impassable rivers, and disrupted schools.
All four northern regions—Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, and Oshikoto—are affected.
