Heavy rainfall replenishes rivers and dams across the country

SIMILAR to the country’s dams, which saw a rise in water levels, recording a total content of 54.3% on Monday, the country’s rivers have also been replenished following last week’s heavy rainfall, which is expected to continue.

Windhoek and Drie Krone in the Khomas Region, Hoachanas and Mariental in the Hardap Region, as well as Karibib in the Erongo Region, are just a few of the areas that have recently experienced substantial rainfall. The impact of this rain has led to flooding in some areas, such as Hoachanas, but the effect is particularly noticeable in the rivers across various regions.

Photos and videos shared on social media showcase several of the country’s replenished rivers and streams, including the Tsauchab, Kam, Konkiep, and Fish rivers in the south, as well as the Khan River in the Erongo Region and the Hoarusib River in the Kunene Region.

The rain has also boosted the water levels in several dams. On Monday, the Swakoppoort Dam’s storage reached 27.4% of full capacity, while the Von Bach, Omatako, Friedenau, and Otjivero Silt dams recorded levels of 26.3%, 5.3%, 46.8%, and 2.7%, respectively. In the south, the Hardap Dam reached 22.1% capacity, and the Oanob Dam recorded 33.4% capacity. Additionally, the Neckartal and Naute dams also experienced inflows, reaching water levels of 79.8% and 31.9%, respectively.

Looking ahead, more rainfall is expected in various parts of the country. The northern and Khomas regions, in particular, are likely to continue experiencing heavy storms, with the potential for flash floods. However, some areas in the south, such as Keetmanshoop in the //Kharas Region, will also experience rain showers on Wednesday.
