MORE than 600 workers at Trigon Metals Inc.’s copper mine in Kombat, Otjozondjupa Region, face an uncertain future after the mine was flooded and had to cease its underground operations indefinitely.
The mining company announced that the flooding was the result of a failure in the mine’s dewatering pumps earlier this month.
In a desperate plea on social media, the mine workers claimed that the copper mine was completely flooded by Wednesday and that they now face retrenchment.
Mine workers are pleading for work for the time being. The mine has a history of flooding over the years, but it always overcome through sheer grit and resilience.
The mine is expected to remain closed for several months while dewatering operations are carried out.
