MVA Fund pleads with drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads

THE loss of 80 lives in over 400 road crashes recorded during this festive season alone serves as a stark reminder of the deadly risks on our roads, now exacerbated by adverse weather conditions.

This was highlighted by the MVA Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, in a media statement issued on Wednesday, citing figures released by the Namibian Police.

According to Martins-Hausiku, a lack of patience and unsafe overtaking have been observed on highways, along with an increase in grazing animals near roads.

On behalf of the MVA Fund and other road safety stakeholders, Martins-Hausiku is appealing to all road users to exercise extreme caution due to the current adverse weather conditions.

She emphasized the need for vigilance as many drivers return from their holiday journeys at a time when heavy rains are sweeping across the country. The rains are severely reducing visibility, making road surfaces slippery, and decreasing the effectiveness of vehicle brakes.

“These conditions,” she said, “significantly increase the risk of road crashes.”

Martins-Hausiku urged motorists to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and remain alert as they travel back to their respective destinations.

She also referred to preliminary crash figures released by the Namibian Police last week, noting that they “highlight a devastating reality.” Over 400 road crashes and 80 lives were lost during this festive season alone.

“These numbers are a stark reminder of the deadly risks on our roads, now made worse by adverse weather conditions,” said Martins-Hausiku.

She stressed that reports from the field indicate impatience and unsafe overtaking on highways, as well as an increase in grazing animals near roads, as significant contributors to road crashes.

“To avert further loss of life, the Fund urges all drivers to make careful decisions, stay alert, and take extra precautions while travelling during the rainy season,” she added.

Road users facing emergencies are encouraged to call the MVA Fund’s toll-free number: 9682.
