City of Windhoek urges public to prepare for flash floods

Staff Reporter

THE City of Windhoek (CoW) has urged the public to prepare for flash floods during the current rainfall season, particularly as heavy showers are expected in the capital this weekend.

“Windhoek is prone to flash floods due to its climate and geographic location. Flooding is one of the most common and widespread natural disasters, second only to fires. Communities across Namibia often face some level of flooding during this time of year. Stay safe and be prepared,” CoW said.

Windhoek has already experienced intense rain showers since the start of the year. According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, the capital can expect more showers today and over the weekend. Caution and vigilance are therefore advised during this period.

To prepare for floods, CoW advised the public to contact its Roads and Stormwater Division to determine if they live in a flood-prone area. Residents in frequently flooded areas are urged to stockpile emergency building materials, such as plywood, plastic sheeting, shovels, and sandbags.

CoW also advised those who find themselves outdoors during a flood to climb to high ground and remain there, as well as avoid walking through any floodwaters. If you are in a car and encounter a flooded area, CoW recommends turning around and finding an alternative route.

“Don’t be inquisitive, as it hampers emergency workers from doing their work. If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. Many deaths have resulted from attempts to move stalled vehicles,” the City of Windhoek warned.

These warnings also apply to other parts of the country, as Windhoek is not the only place expecting thundershowers over the next few days.

The Namibia Meteorological Services predicts that heavy storms will affect the rest of the Khomas Region, as well as the Omaheke, Hardap, and Kharas regions, tomorrow.

Several areas across various regions have already experienced intense rain showers this year. Photos and videos shared on social media have captured the rainfall in places such as Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region, and Gobabis in the Omaheke Region, to name a few.
