NAMIBIA has welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Ambassador Penda Naanda, Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, made the announcement in a statement.
While acknowledging that the decision is somewhat overdue, Naanda described it as a step in the right direction, emphasizing that the Palestinian people deserve justice just as much as any other group worldwide.
Naanda reiterated Namibia’s belief in the crucial role of international institutions in upholding justice and fairness. “When these institutions act impartially and without bias,” he said, “they provide a framework for accountability, protect human rights—including those of Palestinians—and contribute to peace and stability not only in the Middle East but across the globe. This ensures that justice is not only done but also seen to be done, thereby restoring trust and faith in the international system.”
He clarified that the arrest warrants should not be interpreted as an indictment against Israel as a nation but rather as a call for accountability for those responsible for crimes committed.
“Namibia calls on all UN member states to cooperate with the ICC and assist the international justice system, which was created by the global community, in bringing perpetrators to justice and holding them accountable for their actions,” he said.
