SOUL OF DEMOCRACY SHINES AT EPIKURO

SOUL OF DEMOCRACY SHINES AT EPIKURO

The Ovaherero and Ovambanderu centurion commemoration to mark the migration of the tribes from concentration camps to the hamlet of Epukiro ended in a triumph for independence and Namibian democracy.

While remembering the sacrifices of their ancestors and celebrated the legend who suffered immense human abuse and climatic challenges, the Ovambanderu- and Ovaherero communities celebrated their resilience and reflected on their journey from despair of concentration camps to the celebration of nationhood.

The community, characterized by diverse political affiliation is now a national showcase of mutual respect and political tolerance in display all over the village.

These images capture the essence of a transformed nation. They serve as a powerful reminder of Namibia’s journey from division to unity.

Posters around the settlement displayed the political spectrum, and individuals proudly showed their political affiliations adorned on T-shirts representing their parties of choice.

This is more than just a fashion statement; it is a glimpse into a remarkable and ongoing transformation towards Namibian nationhood and the institutions of democracy and independence.

The voices of a 100 years ago that was silenced by the Epikuro concentration camps and banishment into exile returned and are now loud Namibian voices of Independence and tolerance that serves as inspiration to the rest of the country who started with elections and will end op 27 November.
