SWAPO Party Vice President and Presidential candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that water security and access to safe drinking water for the people remain top priorities.
Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks during a rally held in Katima Mulilo on Saturday.
According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, they are committed to accelerating the provision of potable water to rural communities by excavating, expanding, and/or rehabilitating earth dams, and by drilling and installing borehole units in relevant constituencies to ensure water security for both human and animal consumption by 2027.
“The current financial period has seen the expansion of the bulk water reservoir, with phase one completed and inaugurated in March this year,” she said.
She added that eighteen boreholes were drilled across the Zambezi Region, twenty boreholes were installed, and four water points were rehabilitated. Additionally, fifty-four water points across all constituencies were repaired.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said that, to date, NamWater has implemented the Katima Mulilo Raw Water pipeline, completed the Katima Mulilo-Sibbinda pumping capacity upgrade (phase one) with the Sachinga booster, and replaced the Katima Mulilo Raw Water pump between 2023 and 2024.
In addition, she said that the government, through NamWater, will commence construction of the Katima Mulilo Treatment Plant to replace and expand the capacity of the bulk water supply at Katima Mulilo. This is intended to meet the increasing water demand and ensure water supply security.
The consultant appointment is scheduled for this year, and the total investment for the water supply projects is valued at N$1 billion.
