THE Namibian Police (NamPol) have arrested one of the suspected robbers who were allegedly involved in the armed robbery at Katutura Shopping Complex in Windhoek on Monday, where more than N$400,000 was stolen.
NamPol’s Head of Public Relations, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, confirmed that the arrest took place on Monday night in Windhoek’s Hakahana location. She revealed that the police also found and impounded the getaway vehicle, a black Honda Fit with Windhoek registration number (N74316W), which was used by the suspects.
“One shotgun belonging to the security guard that was taken from him during the robbery was recovered. A backpack with clothes and a bulletproof vest used in the robbery and an amount of N$17,000 was found on the arrested suspect,” Shikwambi disclosed.
The arrested suspect is one of about five to six men allegedly involved in the armed robbery. The robbers reportedly held the Crewman and Protector of Southern Cross Security at gunpoint and grabbed a box containing money from the Crewman as well as a shotgun from the Protector.
Shikwambi revealed that the suspect also fired shots into the shopping complex ceiling before fleeing in the getaway vehicle. The stolen money, estimated at N$430,000, was intended to be loaded into the Standard Bank ATM.
“The officers are working tirelessly in pursuit until all suspects are apprehended. Therefore, the suspects should rather surrender themselves because the police will not relent. Our appeal goes to the public in all regions to collaborate with the police,” she added.
Shikwambi urged anyone with relevant information about the suspects to contact Deputy Commissioner Mubebo at 081 268 8888 or any nearby police station.
“The public is assured of their protection; therefore, they should not fear any reprisal,” she added.
