Schlettwein raises concerns about the impact of climate change in the country

THE Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein, once again highlighted Namibia’s extreme vulnerability to climate change, which he said continues to threaten agricultural output and water resources.

“The impacts of climate change, including prolonged droughts and unpredictable rainfall, continue to threaten our agricultural production and water resources. Land degradation, overgrazing, and the encroachment of desertification are eroding our natural resource base, while economic inequalities limit access to food for many of our people,” Schlettwein explained.

He delivered these remarks during the World Food Day commemoration in Gobabis, Omaheke Region, observed under the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future. Leave No One Behind.”

“In Omaheke, a region known for its livestock farming, these challenges are acutely felt. The prolonged droughts have not only diminished pasture but also threatened the livelihoods of our farmers. We know that without sufficient water and productive land, the right to food becomes a distant dream for many of our citizens,” Schlettwein said.

Although the Omaheke Region has been significantly affected, Schlettwein explained that the impact of climate change is being felt nationwide.

“In 2019, the country endured one of the most severe droughts in decades. Once again, this year, we find ourselves grappling with drought conditions due to insufficient rainfall during the 2023/2024 rainy season,” Schlettwein said.

He stressed that malnutrition remains a pressing development issue, affecting all regions and disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable populations. The minister therefore urged the nation to recommit to the goal of ensuring food security in the country.

“As we celebrate World Food Day this year under the theme ‘Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future. Leave No One Behind,’ let us renew our commitment to ensuring that every Namibian enjoys the right to food. This is not just about feeding our people today; it is about creating a sustainable and resilient future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
