PRESIDENT Nangolo Mbumba recently held a bilateral meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Federal Republic of Germany, focusing on various aspects of Namibia-Germany relations, including the Joint Declaration on Genocide, Apology, and Reparations, as well as Namibia’s ambition to develop green industries and green hydrogen.

“The President informed that Namibia and Germany share a painful past and that there is a need to resolve the genocide question in the interests of the affected Herero and Nama communities in particular and Namibians in general. President Mbumba further stressed the need for Germany to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the final round of talks and negotiations on the Joint Declaration reflects outstanding concerns,” the Namibian Presidency explained.

President Mbumba also raised concerns about Namibia’s drought situation, revealing that the severe drought has significantly impacted agricultural productivity and livelihoods. He called on international partners to provide support to enhance the government’s efforts in tackling the ongoing drought crisis.

“Applauding the excellent bilateral relations with Germany, President Mbumba informed that Namibia remains committed to developing green industries and green hydrogen as part of national efforts to spur economic growth, create jobs, and build new industries through investments, skills development, and contribute to global efforts in decarbonisation and the fight against climate change,” the Namibian Presidency said.

President Mbumba expressed appreciation to Chancellor Scholz for their joint commitment to fostering development and increasing German investments in green industries within Namibia. According to the Namibian Presidency, the regularity of high-level meetings serves as a testament to the trust and dedication of both countries to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors.
