THOUGHTS, care, and compassion are with the family of 16-year-old O’Linn Nauyoma, a learner at Etosha Secondary School, who reportedly drowned while on a school tour at Lake Guinas a month ago.
Nauyoma, who drowned on the 8th of September 2024, has yet to have his body retrieved by the police.
NamPol Head of Media, Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, said that despite the search efforts, they have not yet retrieved the deceased’s body.
According to Kuwinga, the deceased was on an LRC training tour to Lake Guinas at the time of the incident.
“After conducting a bungee jump exercise, the deceased and his friend decided to swim in the lake, resulting in the deceased drowning,” he said.
Kuwinga indicated that the body has not yet been retrieved from the lake. The police recently conducted a diving search, hoping to retrieve the body, but were still unsuccessful.
Lake Guinas is a permanent natural lake located on the D3031 gravel road between Otavi and Tsumeb. The lake was formed many years ago when a karst cave collapsed and filled with water.
The lake reportedly has a width of 59 meters and a length of 120 meters, making it the largest permanent lake in Namibia. The centre of the lake is said to have a depth of more than 130 meters, depending on the water level.
Lake Guinas remains a mysterious body of water with many tales, including one suggesting it has an endless bottom that links to other water sources.
