THE Ministry of Mines and Energy’s Deputy Executive Director of Geological Survey, Gloria Simubali, has confirmed that two earthquakes occurred near Groot Aub over the past two days.
She reported that the earthquakes were recorded approximately 17 kilometres south of Groot Aub, with the first occurring on Thursday, 3 October, at 21:29 and the second on Friday morning, 4 October, at 01:33.
“The two events were recorded by eight local seismic stations from the Namibian Seismological Network, namely Gobabis, Windhoek, Kamanjab, Rundu, Katima, Opuwo, Aus, and Ariamsvlei,” Simubali explained.
She revealed that the events were also recorded by three other regional seismic stations from the South African Seismological Network.
“The earthquakes registered local magnitudes (ML) of 3.6 and 3.9 at latitude (Y): -23.083° South, longitude (X): 17.124° East. The two earthquakes were recorded at a shallow depth of less than 10 km,” she added.
Simubali also shared precautionary measures in the event of an earthquake. She advises people to go outside if possible, rather than staying indoors, or to seek refuge under a table if they remain inside. Once outside, it is essential to find an area free of buildings, trees, and power lines. Additionally, she recommends staying away from windows during an earthquake and watching for falling objects.
