A CASE of arson has been recorded in the Omaheke Region after an unknown suspect allegedly set fire to the Gobabis Magistrate Court.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, Media Liaison Officer with the Namibian Police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, between 01:00 and 02:30 at the Gobabis Magistrate Court.
“It is alleged that a female police officer who lives in the Gobabis Police Barracks observed smoke from the Gobabis Magistrate Court, which is situated about 100 metres from the barracks, and immediately alerted her colleagues in the barracks. The local fire brigade was summoned to assist in extinguishing the fire. Preliminary investigations were launched, and it was observed that the suspect entered the yard of the court, used a machete (panga) found at the scene, broke a window pane, and opened the window at the corner of the public prosecutor’s office block, through which it is suspected that the fire was ignited. The office caught fire and spread to the other offices. Some property was completely burned to ashes, while others were salvaged. The police investigation continues,” Kuwinga said.
Kuwinga added that no arrests have been made in connection with the matter.
