Weekend crime report replete with cases of reckless and negligent driving

A CLEARLY overloaded Toyota pickup overturned in the Omaheke Region on Friday, killing one person on the spot, while ten others were injured and taken to the hospital. The vehicle had 23 occupants.

The accident occurred on the gravel road between Uitkoms Farm and the Otjosondu mine in the Hochfeld policing area. It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle after the right rear tire burst. The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Sophia Muvangua Van Rooi.

Several other road accidents were reported to the police over the past weekend.


A motor vehicle accident occurred in Mondesa, Swakopmund, on Friday evening when a Ford Ranger bakkie and a Toyota 7-seater collided head-on while traveling in opposite directions. Both drivers and their passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to the Swakopmund District Hospital. The exact number of passengers was not revealed.

Another motor vehicle accident was reported on Saturday morning about 140 kilometers from Walvis Bay along the C-14 road. It is alleged that a white Mercedes-Benz bus, operated by Sense of Africa, which was traveling towards the one-way bridge from Windhoek, experienced a brake failure. The driver lost control of the bus, which then crashed into a silver Toyota Urban Cruiser traveling in the same direction, causing the vehicle to fall off the bridge. The two occupants of the Toyota Cruiser, both tourists, sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Cottage Private Hospital. Both vehicles were damaged. The bus, which was transporting 21 tourists and a guide, reported no injuries.

A case of culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving is being investigated by the police at Otjinene following a motor accident that occurred along the C29 gravel road between Otjinene and Omitara on Saturday. According to the police, the driver of a silver Ford double cab lost control of the vehicle after the rear left tire burst, causing the vehicle to overturn. The 59-year-old driver, Kahungi Ebenestus, was killed on the spot, and five passengers were injured. The injured passengers were transported to the Otjinene Clinic and later transferred to the Gobabis District Hospital for medical attention.

At Ariamsvlei, the police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a silver Toyota Corolla with four occupants and a white Isuzu bakkie with two occupants collided at the T-junction of the B1 and D202 roads on Friday evening. The occupants of both vehicles sustained minor injuries.

Another case of reckless and/or negligent driving was reported in Kuisebmond on Saturday when a white Toyota pickup struck a 27-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing the road. The victim was rushed to the hospital, treated, and discharged.

In Rundu, Kavango East Region, a male driver was arrested on Friday for reckless, negligent, and drunken driving, as well as for driving without a license. It is alleged that the driver of a silver Nissan Tiida crashed into a building next to AgriBank, damaging the glass. A passenger was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The driver, who tested positive for alcohol, was arrested on the spot.

Another motor vehicle accident was reported in Rundu on Friday involving a two-year-old girl who was hit by a vehicle and injured while walking alone in the street in the Ndama location around 19:00.
