THE southern regions of the country are advised to prioritise water conservation and manage water demand carefully, as the //Kharas and much of the Hardap region are likely to experience below-normal rainfall during part of the upcoming season.
This recommendation was included in the 2024/25 rainfall season advisory, compiled by the Namibia Meteorological Service in partnership with divisions from the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform. The advisory indicates that while most areas of the country are expected to receive above-normal rainfall, parts of the south may experience below-normal rainfall.
“The weather forecast presents a mixed outlook for the upcoming season, with expectations of normal to above-normal rainfall in most parts of the country, contrasting with a drier period in the southern regions,” the advisory predicted.
The advisory therefore encouraged a proactive water management strategy, highlighting the importance of regularly monitoring water bodies to reduce the risks of drought.
“In anticipation of water scarcity, southern regions should prioritise water conservation and manage water demand carefully. Securing additional water resources, such as through the development of infrastructure like borehole drilling, and water transfers, including desalination, is recommended to ensure a reliable water supply,” the advisory recommended.
It also called for regular monitoring of water bodies in other areas to mitigate the impact of floods and for updating regional contingency plans to improve responses to potential flooding.
